The Festival & Cultural Events Support Fund Is Currently Not Available
The earned revenue used by the Buncombe County TDA to support and sponsor local festivals, events and seminars will not be available for the BCTDA’s fiscal year, July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021.
This discretionary revenue is derived from advertising on the ExploreAsheville.com website. In response to the COVID-19 crisis and in effect with the March 2020 billing cycle, the BCTDA ceased the monthly invoicing for this advertising, yet continued to host the ads on the website.
In April, the BCTDA used the remaining balance within our accrued earned revenue budget line to make a lead gift of $50,000 to the One Buncombe Fund for COVID-relief. See the announcement here.
While the BCTDA recognizes the importance of these events and their contributions to the unique culture that is Asheville and Buncombe County, at this time it is uncertain when this fund might be reinstated. Currently it is dependent on the interest and financial ability of tourism partners to restart their advertising on the website.
NOTE TO CURRENT GRANT RECIPIENTS
For those recipients of grants in October 2019 for 2020 calendar year events: The funds allocated are escrowed and will continue to be available for these events. If you must cancel or postpone your event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, please contact Glenn Cox at gcox@ExploreAsheville.com.
About the Festivals & Cultural Events Support Fund
The Festivals & Cultural Events Support Fund was first created in early 2016 by the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority using discretionary advertising revenue from the ExploreAsheville.com website. The grant program was a mechanism to foster those festivals and cultural events that serve Buncombe County residents as well as visitors to the area. The primary purposes of the fund were:
- To support and preserve cultural identity within Buncombe County
- To stimulate the creation of new or expansion of existing resident- and tourist-friendly events
- To help local festivals and cultural events become sustainable and financially viable
Since inception, the Buncombe County TDA has provided a total of $582,800 in support for these events.
